Edmonds Women's Counselor

How i approach our work together

I primarily work from a psychodynamic perspective Here's a summary of what that means:

I help people review emotions, thoughts, early-life experiences, and beliefs to gain insight into their lives and their present-day problems and to evaluate the patterns they have developed over time. (source

We will work together to understand how your early relationships shaped the person you are today.  By coming to understand how your first relationships formed you, we can come to understand your style of relating -- the way you interact with the people and circumstances in your life.

Like all of us, some aspects of your style of relating are helpful to you and some are hurting you or others.  By looking to the stories of your past, we can together come to understand your present struggles and move toward hope for a brighter future.

One of the most helpful ways we can do this work together is by frequently looking at the relationship you and I develop. Because we all tend to replicate our early relationships over and over, we can use our interactions in therapy as a way to understand how you learned to relate to others when you were a child and how you are still doing so today.

Once you know why you do what you do, it becomes more possible to change the things you want to change and create the life that you hope for.
